I'm always astonished by Europeans in their twenties walking about India in
dark coloured 'combat' shorts and a 'heavy metal' T-shirt, often seen
carrying a huge back-pack, who seem amazed that the locals treat them as a
sort of walking wallet.

On the other hand if you make a small effort to speak a word or two of the
local language and dress in a suitable/acceptable manner (and hire someone
to carry your baggage) you'll find the locals are delighted and that their
English improves beyond all measure.

Considering the dire warnings sprinkled through the rest of
this thread how does one hire "hire someone to carry your
baggage" who won't rapidly disappear into the distance with
it?
