Well, I guess that's respectful....
If you're living and working in other countries, often you are not
permitted other accounts. Until 4-5 years ago, you couldn't even get a
cell phone in Thailand without having the correct visa or ID. In
Malaysia or Indonesia, you must show proof of residency or your passport
and visa to get a sim card. This gets immediately phoned into a central
government office to activate your card. If you are a resident of
Singapore, native or not, and you download anti-government information,
you go to jail.
I hesitate to get in the middle but I have had a hand phone in
Thailand for about ten years without showing anything but money. I
have been asked for information and fumbled around as said, "gee, all
I got is my driver's license" and start digging it out and the vendors
always say, "never mind". Most of them were bought at MBK by the way.
**You do realise Bruce, that Steve is a volunteer tourist policeman and part
of his 'duties' with the Royal Thai Police is not only assisting lost
tourists and rounding up stray dogs, but to report/snitch on any illegal
activity, however minor. So you've put your foot in it by telling this to,
of all people, the mother of all snitches Steve Kramer.
So, Steve, you have a confession from Bruce and you are now duty bound to
report this. If you don't then you become an accessory to a crime and face
the threat of arrest and imprisonment. What are you going to do Steve -
snitch on him or risk being arrested for being an accessory to a crime? You
could end up in jail if you don't snitch on him. Keep us posted son....
:-)
In small towns they don't even ask for identification, just grab the
cash. In addition there is a fairly active market in second hand SIM
cards.
Malaysia, as of last September, did not ask for identification to buy
a SIM.
Singapore does demand a passport to actuate a SIM and they do record
the passport information.
