I don't know what you mean when you sound like you are saying there is
hardly any boats to see upstream... Upstream there is still a "LOT" of
boats, almost always at least one in sight, usually two to four of them in
sight, I'd guess. Chongqing is China's largest city by far, it ships an
awful lot of stuff down that river. Yea, I agree, the river may have the
same quantity of traffic as below. But the river is much wider below the
boats are "much" further away from your boat when you are cruising down into
the much wider Yangtze.
If you're thing is to view a lot of boat traffic you'd be much better off
being in Shanghai and watching many more types and numbers of boats. You
almost can't count them there are so many when you are looking at the river
from the pearl tower or sitting by the river at the Bund.. I promise you
you'll see more boats inside the center of Shanghai and they'll be much
closer to you there. I think that river is called the Hungpu, or something
like that.. I forget at present, and I don't have my map handy.

I loved the trip, Most people can never imagine how majestic those mountains
are on the river by just looking at the pictures. The mountains / gorges
seem to go on forever. That scenery up that river has got to be one of the
more lovely scenery in the world.

Read my post again carefully, I didn't say 'hardly any boats', just that
the river traffic dropped off quite a bit (compared to downstream from
Wuhan)...still quite a bit of traffic but probably only half or less.
It's not my thing to watch river traffic but I don't find it boring
while on a river cruise. I did not think too much about the majesty of
the mountains, seemed pretty ho-hum to me, even in one of those
tributaries around the Three Gorges...I've seen much nicer mountain and
river scenes in other countries, including Canada and the US. The
limestone peaks of Guilin are very nice however as was some of the peaks
of Huangshan (sp?)
As for prices, it cost us $1800 US per person for an 18 day 17 nite
tour, including rt air from Los Angeles to Shanghai, all meals, tours of
Shanghai (3 days), Wuhan, Three Gorges including the dam site and
tributary, 2 or 3 other minor places on the river, Chongquin, Xian and
Bejing and 4 or 5 star hotels when not on the river boat (Victoria
Cruises, 2002). One guide thruout with an added guide at each shore
stop. While on the river every day was spent on shore taking a tour,
returning in the afternoon to continue upstream. Went to Guilin and
other Yunnan Province places on a different tour last year.
