We travelled independently, didn't use a tour company, so can't give
you any recommendations for guides. BUT - recommend that IF you go
independently, you NOT use an online booking agent called
SinoHotel.com. Or - if you do - double check your booking with the
hotel directly before you go. After a 4 hr wait for the cable car, we
ended up stranded at the top of the mountain in pouring rain and a
couple of suitcases (we'd been on business in Shanghai). The hotel had
no record of the booking and sinohotel.com apologized but said that
they could not find another room and both cable cars had stopped
running for the evening (we did try valiantly for the last one).
After a few hours sitting in their lobby, the hotel found us what was
obviously a room for employees in the rabbit warren at the back of the
hotel. I actually think the lobby would have been more comfortable but
have to give them "A" for effort.
To make up for it Sinohotel.com gave us a "free" tour guide the next
day - she ended up taking us to a few places that cost us a great deal
of money and then took us to a "Museum" where we got ripped off. The
tour guide was an independent - no company name (personal name of Gail
whom I recommend you stay away from).
Sadly - we never saw the beauty of Huangshan - either in reality or
figuratively.
