Imaginative Traveler and Explore offer lovely, low-priced small group tours.
You join the group on India. Small hotels. Buy your own food and pleanty
of flexiblity on what to see. Not like the bigger names you mentioned.
Although younger travelers may come, I;ve found most of the groups have
several 50+ year olds.
Not backpacking but not luxury unbecoming India. A good blend for me.
