The problem of NWA running out of crews at the end of the month is a
real one. I wouldn't book on them on the last few days of the month,
either.

This is just a thought, but why don't they cancel a flight here and
there throughout the month, rather than a bunch at the end of month.

Mostly because they don't know until the end of the month how much
pilot time they have left. Also because that wouldn't really solve
anything, since people are equally peeved to have their planes
cancelled at any time of the month, and because this problem shouldn't
exist at all, since a normally competent airline has enough crews to
fly the flights that they schedule.
