This is just a thought, but why don't they cancel a flight here and
there throughout the month, rather than a bunch at the end of month.

Gut feeling, they probably have enough pilots to cover the flights if
everything goes well -- They won't know exactly how many sick days,
delayed flights, emergency stops or other incidents will come up to know
how many flights to cancel.
