I object to paying 2-3 dollasrs for simple tap water.
Has anyone tried this? -- Carry through security one or two EMPTY
bottles. Then in the "secure" area fill them from the hallway water
fountains.

I doubt there would be a problem, but try it and find out. The worst
that can happen is you have to throw away the empty bottles.
