pardon uses of former names which are out of date, the way i learned
'em 40-50 years ago
holland
hong kong
fiji island
tahiti
hawaii
australia
singapore
maccao (for the fire crackers etc)
bombay
japan
shang-hi
pei-ping
seoul
taiwan
eastern europe (poland, czech republic, budapest, rumania, bulgaria,
moscow)
scandanavia
argentina
chile
brazil
currently, i'd like holland and then to eastern europe, but why go
where the u.s. dollar doesn't buy much when i could go to somoa or
hawaii?
Holland can be pretty cheap compared to most of Western Europe. For
instance, it's cheaper than Australia.
Macao is boring. Okay as a day trip from Hong Kong, but not as its own
trip.
.....and I don't know why he thinks American Samoa or Hawaii are cheap and
bargain-filled (although Spam plate lunches in "greasy spoons" are cheap and
filling). All things are relative. Yes, the Euro has become more expensive
compared to the dollar. On the other hand, unless you've been foolish on
both the saving/investing side and the spending side of your ledger, the
number of dollars you hold hasd expanded to keep real costs about equal.
Execpt for flop houses, hotels are generally more expensive in Europe, but
careful travelers can certainly manage within a budget and still "see the
sights".
What time of year are you going to go? And what weather do you like?
That would make a significant different for some of the places.
Yeah, "Winter" airfares to Central Europe are cheap, but any who have ever
been in Central Europe in Winter found it about like Chicago only the slush
was softer and blacker. In Eastern Europe, Budapest and Prague seem to
generally be rated higher than most other cities.
After reading a number of this guy's earlier posts, Mumbai is not going to
be his cup of chai. On the other hand, Singapore's neat, clean and well
organized if a bit rigid, and the street food is good and generally safe to
eat. Of the Oriental capitals, Bangkok probably has the most to see and do,
but some folks are greatly offended by the perspective and the crowds. Just
as St. Petersburg's appeal is lessened by all the Russians there, the same
can be said of Seoul, where the streets are filled with Koreans who display
all the bad habits of the Japanese and none of their graces. The occasional
dog butcher shop livens the street scene, although the anguished yelps
offend some tourists.
Here's a secret resort, available on a modestly priced airline serving LAX.
The beaches of Subic Bay, plenty of shade from the mangroves, although your
towel may get damp, are among the best. The major city of the area,
Olongapo, has been used to serving the needs of discriminating tourists for
decades, and has both custom tailors and skilled masseuses available 24/7.
You can rent a car in Manila for the scenic drive through the quiet Pintabo
region, and stay in any of Olongapo's many small hotels catering to weary
travelers. The cuisine is beyond reproach, with the famous first course,
"Baluts" adding excitement to every meal, no matter what the mystery meat in
the adobo may be. The Filipinos are respectful of others and their
property, so locking your rental car or securing your valuables will be
unnecessary (and serve no purpose). The Urban transit system is among the
world's best, with frequent service from "jitneys" in all directions.
Waterside neighborhoods are beyond compare for evening strolling, with
constant attention from locals ready to provide services or to carry your
shopping bags, etc..
