Cathay Pacific Fleet Additions?

On my recent return from MNL to JFK via HKG on Cathay Pacific, I flew
all legs on the same aircraft, which surprisingly turned out to be a
747-400 with Pratt & Whitney engines.
This surprised me, as I recalled (and the inflight magazine confirmed)
that all of CX's 744s are Rolls-Royce powered.
The placarding in the cabin and lavs made it clear that this had once
been some other airline's machine. All the features and amenities of a
"regular" CX 744 were of course present, including nice new seats.
So, why is CX operating a "non-standard" 747-400? How many do they
have? Was this necessitated by delays in the A380?
TIA!
