Re: Dogs?

4-5 a month from where? One airline? Across the board? Out of how many

I dunno - IIRC there were 4-5 per airline per month when I was looking.
That was enough to make me feel the risk wasn't worth it.

<snip>

The airline
employees can pick up on some of them but not all. It's not, for example,
easy for an airline employee to tell that a dog has a heart condition.
That's what the vet reports/owner declarations are for.

Of course, but a lot of animals have heart attacks on planes when they
wouldn't necessarily had they been driven instead, for example. Flying
as cargo is extremely stressful.

I'm not saying the airlines aren't ever at fault, as everyone makes
mistakes. It's tragic when animals die or suffer due to someone else's
incompetence.

It is, however, unfair to say that it is NEVER safe to ship animals as
cargo particularly when people may not have any choice. (Many animals
cannot be taken in the cabin at all.) It is usually very safe. Breeders
ship animals all over the country and wouldn't do that if their animals
would be at risk.

Ha! Not all breeders have the best interest of their animals at heart.
Many breeders in this country are in it for the money and don't care
about their animals. "Breeder" is a dirty word to many people, myself
included...

Of course there are times when you may not have a choice, but if I have
a choce, my animals will be with me. They can't have an "accident"
where I don't know for sure what happened, if I am there to make sure
it doesn't occur at all. It's just not worth the risk.

There are animal transportation companies that will drive your animals
anywhere in the US. A number of regular posters in
rec.pets.cats.health+behavior have used these services and are quite
pleased with them. To me, this is much preferable than merely handing
your animal off to be shipped as cargo where it will travel unattended.
I also don't trust the baggage handlers not to do stupid stuff like
torment or tease the animals. People simply can't be trusted.
