Different airlines will swallow different tax burdens on FF tickets without
passing them along to you. You might try using your NW miles to book on an
affiliated (CO, DL etc.) carrier to see if it is much cheaper. A couple
years back I used NW award miles for Hamburg-Lyon, and the taxes even on
that intra-european connection were over $60. NW frequent flyer
administrators have been openly queried about the high ancilliary charges,
so hopefully things will change in the future.
