Gary,
Unless you know you did something to piss them off them, I am assuming this
is coming as a surprise to you and you don't know why they've blocked you.
(If you do know why they blocked you, don't bother reading any of this,
LOL.)
I run a couple of websites and have unfortunately had to display this
message to some paid members as well. We live in an age where, if you are
successful, you are fair game for hackers and their ilk. Recently, we went
through a "denial of service" attack. Many of you who've been on the web a
while probably know what that is, but for those who don't, I'll explain.
There is an emormous amount of ignorant users on the web. (While this is not
news, please understand that I use the term "ignorant" as meaning
"un-informed" or "unknowing" and not as "unintelligent".) A great many of
these people on the web have had trojan programs unknowingly installed on
their machines. On command, these programs will use these infected computers
to target a specific website and try to overwhelm its server(s) by opening
one connection after another. It's kind of like going down a bank of
payphones at the airport and calling the same number on each phone and, as
soon as they answer, you leave the phone dangling - line still open - and
move on to the next phone to call them again. And so on and so on... After a
few times, all you get is a busy signal. When you get thousands of machines
opening thousands of connections to your servers, all your real customers
get is a "Page cannot be displayed" error. Not very good for business,
right?
There is only one way to stop this. Identify the IP addresses that
repeatedly open connections and block them out. Sometimes, an entire block
of IP's must be blocked. This is done because a great many IP addresses are
"dynamic", meaning, everytime you log into the net, your Internet Service
Provider (ISP) gives you a different address. AOL has millions of different
addresses that their users can be connected through.
What does this mean to you? It means that HWC may have suffered a denial of
service attack recently and blocked all IP's, including the one you logged
in with. So, this means that A) you could have a trojan program that was
involved in the attack or B) you got connected through a dynamic address
that was previously used in an attack. If your ISP is dynamic, then you
should be able to disconnect from the net and reconnect and get a different
IP address. If you are still blocked, then A) you could have a trojan
program that was involved in the attack or B) a whole block of your ISP's
addresses could be blocked or C) the IP address of one of your ISP's routers
could be blocked.
I would suggest you contact them via e-mail and ask them if this is the
case. What seems like dictatorship to you may be just a case of them
protecting their business. They may also have a solution or plan that will
help you to regain access to their site. Make sure, however, that before you
contact them you are 100% positive that your machine is not infected with a
trojan program.
Sorry for the long-winded explanation. Just trying to offer a less personal
reason of why you may have been blocked.
Thanks,
~Dan
