I went to Berkeley today to see Cal, Florida International,
Idaho, and Northeastern play. Yesterday, Florida International
played Northeastern and Cal played Idaho. The rest of the
round robin happened today.
As usual, the results are down a page, in case anyone is trying
to avoid them.

That should be enough.
I asked Yu-Ping Wang about yesterday's matches, and was told that
FIU beat Northeastern in five, but Cal had an easy time with Idaho.
Today, they played two matches at noon, with the courts perpendicular
to the normal court and the bleachers pulled back, giving them good
separation between the two courts. I kept notes on the Cal match with
Northeastern: Cal won 30-22, 30-19, 30-15. The side-out scores were
14-6, 15-5, 19-4. Meanwhile, Florida International beat Idaho,
30-22, 30-15, 22-30, 30-21. The Cal match was over before the end
of game three, so I kept notes on game 4; the side-out score was 12-3.
That match was over by 2 PM, at which point they took a break until
4:30. During the break, they removed the taping from the floor, and
reset Haas Pavilion to its normal configuration.
In the 4:30 match, Idaho beat Northeastern 30-27, 30-25, 30-23. The
side-out scores were 13-11, 17-12 13-7.
In the final match, Cal beat FIU 30-23, 30-16, 30-21. The side-out
scores were 15-9, 18-4, 20-12.
It is late, and I am tired, so rather than giving details of the
scoring or personnel (if you are interested, email me and I will
try to write something up), I will just give some general impressions.
Cal's freshman setter, Carli Lloyd, looks good. We'll see how she
does against better competition later in the year. Some of the
more interesting sets for Cal were back sets from the middle blockers
when Lloyd dug the first ball - I think the hitters converted most
(if not all) of them. Another freshman, Caitlyn Murphy, played libero
for three of the six games. She and Kristen Kathan, who played libero
for the other three games, both looked good, too. For the most part,
Cal played Hana Cutura and Angie Pressey at outsides, Ellen Orchard
and Kat Reilly at middles (but Mindi Wiley took over for Reilly in
two or three games), and Morgan Beck at opposite. Cal made the sweet
sixteen last year, and it would be no surprise if they repeated.
Florida International is aptly named. Their normal line-up has
a setter, Keila Oliveira, from Brazil, an opposite, Ines Medved,
from Croatia, with Natalia Valentin from Puerto Rico playing the
back row (though Andra Rasby from Lincoln, Nebraska played back row,
and Goby Jaimes from Miami, Florida played front row for the last game
against Idaho and the first game against Cal), middle blockers
Ania Szymanska from Poland and Mina Spasojevic from Serbia, outside
hitters Olga Vergun from the Ukraine and Yarimar Rosa from Puerto Rico,
and a libero, Mariana Drumeva from Bulgaria. They have a height
disadvantage, with Vergun listed at 6'1" and a few players at 6'0",
but no one taller.
I was surprised at how well Northeastern played. They did not win any
matches, but played better than most of the eastern teams (excepting
Florida and Penn State) that I have seen. They had leads in all three
games with Idaho, but could not hold them.
Anyway, that's more than I planned to write. It was a good afternoon
of volleyball, even though I forgot (again!) to bring earplugs.
Actually, it was not very noisy until the last match - and even that
one was not close to what Haas Pavilion will be like later in the
season (I suspect that school will not start for another month -
perhaps summer quarter is still in session).
Take care.
