Re: Fed Rules Question

It is still legal to retrieve in NFHS. Not so USAV. However if the other
team makes contact - illegal block.

A bad call is a bad call......

So if the signal and call were correct, let me make sure I understand
what the illegal activity would have been:

A back row setter goes into the plane to try to retrieve and set an
overpass. This is legal if no contact with the ball is made by the
other side while the ball is in the plane.

I *THINK* that it is legal. I'm not Fed certified and don't know if
they've changed anything with regard to bring back balls in the plane
in this situation. I don't see any such listed on the rules
comparison docs, though, so I'm assuming it's legal, yes.

If it were illegal, the signal (I couldn't imagine) would not be an
illegal block signal.

But, while the ball is in the plane, contact IS made from the other
side, which by definition is an attack.

Well, actually it might be ruled a block on the other side,

As a result, the setter's
contact, by definition, becomes a block... by a back row player.

Yup, a block of a block. Blocks are defined by virtue of a player
close to the net reaching higher than the net and deflecting the ball
coming from the opponent.

So even though the intent was not to block, the smart contact by the
other side forces the contact to be ruled illegal.

Is that correct?

You got it!
