Re: Libero setting from front zone "extension"

I see. But that's a USAV specialty, right? I was actually wondering
about FIVB rules (I'm in Germany), sorry I didn't point that out more
clearly. FIVB certainly allows playing the ball from behind the bench,
spectator areas etc., it's all just "beyond the free zone".

But back to the original question - after all, USAV allows players to
retrieve the ball from there as well, albeit with more restrictions.
To make sure I'm understanding correctly: According to the definition
in 1.4.1, the front zone consists of the areas A and B in the diagram
below. Since B is therefore already *part* of the front zone, I don't
think it is meant when 19.3.1.4 mentions an *extension* of the front
zone, but that that would in fact have to be area C. Correct?

Your reasoning is correct, and I suspect you've now officially thought
about this particular wording wtih a lot more scrutinty than the folks
who wrote the rule. The USAV and FIVB rulebook has many such
imperfections and simply doesn't stand up well to this level of
scrutiny.

In this case, the flaw doesn't really have any rules consequence that
I can tell.

For the sake of discussion, if the libero manages to make a hand set
from C that's not considered "out" somehow, I would certainly--by
virtue of the spirit of the rule being "we don't want libero's acting
as setters"-- consider the libero "in the front zone" for the purpose
of that set. If an attacker wacks away at it completely above the
height of the net, I'd call that fault.

In USAV though, a player entirely in the C area, with no body part in
contact with the playing surface, once the ball contacts that player
it's "out," end of play.
