Re: California at Stanford (NCAA WVB) results

I did not give the scoring Friday night, but was asked to provide it, so you will find it below.

I worked until about 5:30 AM Friday, got about an hour in bed but
no sleep, then went back in before 8 AM to join a telephone
conference call before a 9 AM all hands meeting, so by the time
I finished writing up who had played (at nearly 3 AM Saturday),
I was unable to continue. I thought I might post the scoring
after reporting on Saturday night's match, but I was falling
asleep while finishing that message ...

So here it is, finally.

I'll leave the previous post quoted here, just in case anyone
wants to scroll up and down without having to switch to another
message.

That should be enough.

Stanford won, 30-24, 26-30, 30-27, 24-30, 15-10. Side-out
scores were 16-10, 12-16, 16-13, 11-17, 9-4. If I remember
the stats from KZSU (heard on my way home, a few hours ago),
Stanford was out-hit by Cal, .172 to .162 (I'm confident that
the first two digits of those numbers are correct, but would
not want to bet on the last digits, except the two last digits
are within two of each other. But I no longer bet on my memory).
Another odd factoid: the team serving first won every game.

Cal played: Samantha Carter (S), Jenna Brown (OPP), Alicia Powers
(MB), Ellen Orchard (MB), Alexis Kollias (DS; Morgan Beck played
OH in the front row; ( Bryte Nielson played back row for two points
in game three), and Angie Pressey (OH). Libero Jillian Davis
played for the middles, serving for Orchard.

Stanford played: Katie Goldhahn (S; Michelle Mellard replaced her
to block occasionally on Stanford's serve - Nji Nnamani set on those
plays. Mellard was in for one point in game one, two points in game
three; and one point in game four), Nji Nnamani (OPP),
Foluke Akinradewo (MB), Lizzie Suiter (MB; Franci Girard replaced her
for the last three front-row points of the match), Franci Girard (OH;
Erin Waller played front row from 11-13 in game two to 28-27 in game
three, and replaced Fishburn on rotating to the front row the first
time in game four, but Girard came back in to the front row at 1-3;
Waller played all the front row in game 5; Jessica Fishburn played
all the back row), and Kristin Richards (OH). Libero Courtney Schultz
played for the middles, serving for Suiter and Girard.

But now I'm too tired to continue, so check the Stanford web site
for more information.

Scoring (Stanford score first):

Game One (Stanford served first):
  2-0 ,,,3-2 3-3 ,4-3 5-3 ,,6-4 9-4 ,9-5 9-6 ,,,11-7 14-7
    ,14-8 14-9 ,15-9.
  ,,,,,,18-12 23-12 ,23-13 23-15 ,,24-16 24-18 ,,25-19 25-21 ,26-21.
  ,26-22 26-23 ,27-23 29-23 ,,30-24 [a service error opened the door,
giving Stanford the serve at 27-23. Girard got a tip to fall
for 28-23, and a Bear hitting error gave the Cardinal game point.
Pressey got a kill for a side-out, but Nnamani got landed a tip
    for the game].

Game Two (California served first):
  ,,,,,3-2 9-2 ,,,10-4 10-9 ,,11-10 11-14 ,,12-15.
  ,,,14-16 15-16 ,,16-17 17-17 ,17-18 17-24 ,,18-25 18-26
    ,,,20-27 22-27 ,22-28.
,23-28 25-28 ,,,26-30 [after three straight Akinradewo kills,
the last two off overpasses of Schultz's serve, Cal called
time-out at 25-28. When play resumed, Pressey got a kill
off the block for a side-out and game point. Akinradewo then
hit one off a blocker's head and long, to bring Stanford to
26-29. Beck then hit one off the block for the game].

Game Three (Stanford served first):
  2-0 ,2-1 2-2 ,3-2 6-2 ,6-3 6-4 ,,,,,,9-7 9-12 ,10-12 11-12
    ,11-13 11-14 ,12-14.
  14-14 ,,15-15 19-15 ,,20-16 21-16 ,21-17 21-18 ,,,,23-20 23-22
    ,,24-23 24-24 ,25-24.
  ,,26-25 28-25 ,28-26 28-27 ,29-27 30-27 [Pressey hit one into the
block for a side-out at 25-25, but Richards went up the middle
for a kill and then Cal hit one into the net, so they called
their last time-out at 27-25. When play resumed, Suiter killed
an overpass of Richard's serve. But Cal got a kill (from the
right side, but I did not catch the hitter) and then Stanford
hit one long, so they called their last time-out at 28-27.
Richards then hit one from the back row, off the top of a triple
block and long to give Stanford game point. An ace for Schultz
    closed out the game].

Game Four (California served first):
,,1-1 1-10 [no, not a typo. Jenna Brown hit one into the block
for the side-out, then Brown and Orchard got a block before
Stanford hit it into the net on three straight points, forcing
the Cardinal to call time-out at 1-5. It did not help - Beck
hit one off the block, a Cardinal hitting error (the referee
said there was no touch - I'm glad I didn't have to decide that
question), and kills by Beck and Brown got Stanford to call
their last time-out at 1-9. But another hitting error made it
1-10 before Girard got a roll shot down for the side-out]
    ,2-10 3-10 ,,4-11 5-11 ,,,,,7-14 7-17 ,8-17 9-17 ,9-18.
  9-19 ,10-19 11-19 ,,,,13-21 14-21 ,,15-22 17-22 [Cal called their
first time-out after Goldhahn got a kill and combined with
Akinradewo for a block after a long rally. Beck rolled one to
    the back line for the side-out] ,,18-23 20-23 ,20-24 20-25
    ,21-25 23-25 ,23-26.
,,24-27 24-30 [a service error opened the door (sound familiar?),
and the Bears pounced on it. Beck got a tip to fall (and induced
at least one Cardinal into the net) for 24-28, then a triple
block by Beck, Orchard, and Brown gave the Bears game point.
Beck got a kill to end it].

Game Five (Stanford served first):
5-0 [Waller got a kill off an assist from Akinradewo, then after
a great save by Schultz, Akinradewo put down a quick set. Two
Bear errors led to a Cal time-out at 4-0. A Cal hitting error
made it 5-0 before Orchard hit one into the block for a side-out]
,,,,7-2 8-2 [a block by Goldhahn and Akinradewo makes it 8-2 for
    the side change] ,,,,,,11-5 12-5 ,12-6 12-10 ,13-10.
15-10 [repeat after me, "a service error opened the door" after
the Bears had scored four service winners with two blocks,
a kill, and a Cardinal hitting error. A block by Nnamani and
Akinradewo gave Stanford match point, and a Bear hitting error
    ended it].

Whew! I get exhausted just writing about it.

Take care.
