I guess that should be enough.
Arizona won, 30-26, 17-30, 29-22, 26-30, 18-16. The 29 is not
a typo, but it might be my error rather than the scorekeeper's.
See the game three scoring below for the details. Side-out
scores were 15-11, 8-21, 13-6, 14-18, 6-4.
It was an exciting match - awesome hitting on both sides,
but a bit frustrating from the Stanford side. Stanford
had three match points, but could not convert - and Arizona
converted on their first one. Stanford had a 26-21 lead in
game one, but Kim Glass got a kill for the side-out, and then
served eight winners (including two aces) to take the game.
Trivia: the team that served first (and from the west? end)
won each game. Second trivia: all but one of the players on
Arizona's roster have last names in the first half of the
alphabet. The only exception, Kim Nash, was not in uniform
tonight.
Arizona played: Amy Dyck (S; Stephanie Butkus was in for three
points late in game two, and for twelve more early in game four;
Angie Ayers came in twice to block as part of a double switch that
put Butkus in to the back row on Arizona's serve in game four -
Stanford sided out each time, so Dyck was only out for one play
each time), Kristina Baum (OPP; Katie Jackels played all the back
row in games three through five, except on the two plays in game
five when Butkus replaced her on the double switch noted above),
Bre Ladd (MB), Dominique Lamb (MB), Jennifer Abernathy (OH;
Katie Jackels came in for two points in right back after Stanford
had just scored two points early in game one, leaving on Arizona's
side-out; the other two rotations in game one, and the first
rotation in game two, she came in when Abernathy lost her serve,
and again came out when Arizona sided-out - she was in for
four points the first time, one the second time, and two in
game two; Jackels came in at middle back later in game two when
Stanford was on a run, leaving on the side-out after six plays),
and Kim Glass (OH). Libero Brittany Leonard played for the middles,
serving for Lamb. On the bench, but not in the match, were
Brooke Buringrud, Randy Goodenough, and Enobong Ibok (all 6'2"
- 188 cm - or taller).
Stanford played: Katie Goldhahn (S; Michelle Mellard came in to
block for one play on Stanford's serve late in game four
[Nji Nnamani set on the play], but the refs did not see a touch
[many fans did] on Akinradewo's hit, so Arizona got the side-out
and Goldhahn returned), Nji Nnamani (OPP; Michelle Mellard came in
to block for the last point of game three, but Kim Glass got a kill
anyway), Foluke Akinradewo (MB), Lizzie Suiter (MB),
Franci Girard (OH; Jessica Fishburn played all the back row), and
Kristin Richards (OH). Libero Courtney Schultz played for the
middles, serving for Suiter. On the bench were Kirsten Hornbeak,
Jennifer Wilson, and Erin Waller. Cynthia Barboza, Bryn Kehoe,
and Alex Fisher were also on the bench, recuperating and not in
uniform.
Scoring (Stanford score first; my usual conventions):
Game One (Arizona served first):
0-3, 1-3 4-3 ,,,,,,,,8-7 10-7 ,,,11-9.
,12-9 15-9 ,,16-10 18-10 ,,,19-12 19-13 ,,20-14 20-15
,,21-16 21-18 ,22-18 23-18 ,23-19.
,,,,,,26-22 26-30 [Glass got a kill of the top of the block
for the side-out at 26-22, and then the roof fell in.
Abernathy got a kill, Dyck went over on two for a kill,
making it 26-24, and Stanford took their last time-out.
Glass got a hard topspin serve to land in front of the
passers for an ace, then Stanford was called for a lift
to tie the score. Glass got another ace when the Cardinal
thought it would go long - it was a foot in (my seat is
on the extension of the end line - I had a good view).
Abernathy got a tip to fall, and then Abernathy and Ladd
got a block for game point. Abernathy put down an overpass
for the game].
Game Two (Stanford served first):
2-0, 2-1 2-2 ,3-2 4-2 ,,5-3 6-3 ,,7-4 10-4 ,10-5 10-9
,11-9 13-9 ,13-10 13-11 ,14-11 16-11 ,,17-12.
18-12 ,,,19-14 19-16 ,20-16 27-16 ,,28-17 30-17 [Richards
got a kill for the side-out at 28-17, then another kill
for game point. Goldhahn and Suiter put down a block for
the game].
Game Three (the Wildcats served first):
,,,,2-2 2-4 ,,,4-5 7-5 ,7-6 7-7 ,8-7 [as near as I can tell,
the scorekeeper gave Arizona a gift point here. As I saw
it, there was a Stanford hitting error, which would have
made it 7-8, but Arizona was called over the net - but it
was a moment or two before the call was noticed. I think
they had already scored the hitting error, and did not
erase it. Of course, it might also be possible that the
play went too quickly for me, and Arizona was called over
on the subsequent play. But I'll score it as I saw it.
For the rest of the game, the scoreboard showed one more
Arizona point than I'm showing] ,,,9-9.
9-10 ,,10-11 10-13 ,,,12-14 14-14 ,14-15 14-16 ,,15-17 15-18
,,16-19 16-21 ,,17-22.
17-23 ,,18-24 18-26 ,,,,,21-28 22-28 ,22-29 [so according to
the scoreboard, Arizona reached game point on Abernathy's
kill (off the block into the antenna), but a service error
gave the ball back to the Cardinal, and a hitting error
delayed the inevitable. Glass got a kill off the block
to end it].
Game Four (the Cardinal served first):
4-0 ,4-1 4-2 ,5-2 6-2 ,,7-3 10-3 ,10-4 10-5 ,,,,,13-7 14-7
,,15-8.
,15-9 15-18 [Abernathy served, Glass got a block, Baum and
Lamb got a block, Baum got a kill, Lamb and Baum got a block,
Abernathy got an ace, two hitting errors, Lamb and Baum got
another block, and Abernathy got another ace before Richards
finally got a kill for the side-out] ,16-18 17-18
,17-19 17-21 ,18-21 19-21 ,,20-22 24-22 ,,25-23 26-23
,26-24 26-25 ,27-25 29-25 ,,30-26 [a ball handling error
gave Stanford the serve at 27-25; an ace for Akinradewo
and a block by Richards gave the Cardinal game point.
Abernathy got a kill for the side-out, but Richards got
another kill to end it].
Game Five (Arizona served first):
,,1-1 1-4 ,,,,,,,5-7 7-7 ,7-8 [Glass ran a slide, and got
a kill off the top of the block into the stands for the
side-change] 7-9 [Baum got a kill when the dig hit the
scoreboard] ,,8-10.
,,,10-11 11-11 ,,,,13-13 14-13 [Stanford reached match point
on a Wildcat hitting error, and Arizona called their first
time-out] ,,15-14 [Abernathy got a kill for the side-out,
but Richards got a kill for Stanford's second match point,
and Arizona called their last time-out] ,,16-15 [Glass got
a kill for the side-out, but Richards got a kill when the
dig went over the net and just wide as the Cardinal watched
- for Stanford's third match point] ,16-16 [Stanford was
called for a net violation].
16-18 [Glass got a kill for Arizona's first match point, and
Lamb put down an overpass to end it].
I'm exhausted.
More tomorrow after the San Jose State - Hawai'i match.
Take care.
