That should be enough.
Stanford won, 30-25, 30-21, 30-24. Side-out scores were
16-11, 14-6, 14-8 [that's from memory - now let's see what
they really were. ... Not bad - only one of the 12 numbers
was wrong - I fixed it. Not good - it was a subtraction error,
and I have in the past gone entire years without making one of
those - at least, that's how I remember it. Sometimes having
a bad memory is really nice!].
The Sun Devils played: Giovana Melo (S; Rachel Mittelstaedt
replaced her at 9-1 in game two and finished the match),
Nina Reeves (OPP - and when was the last time you saw two
good teams play with both opposites less than 5' 10" [177 cm]?;
Alison Lund played all the back row; Kristin Trayser came in
for Reeves at 7-0 in game two and played the rest of the front
row in that game), Staci Smith (MB; Tierra Burnley replaced her
at 28-22 in game three - Arizona State had used their last
time-out at 22-12; Smith returned to serve at 29-23),
Colette Meek (MB; Tierra Burnley replaced her when she rotated
to the front at 19-15 in game one; Meek returned at 16-5 in
game two and finished the match), Margie Giordano (OH; Sarah
Watkins, wearing number 6 although she was listed in the program
at number 14, replaced Giordano in the front row at 23-10 in
game two; for the rest of the match, Watkins played all the front
row and served, with Giordano playing back row after Watkins
finished serving - although I am not quite sure who served the
last time in game three, as my notes say that Giordano returned
both before serving and after). Libero Sydney Donahue played for
the middles, serving for Meek and Burnley).
Stanford played: Katie Goldhahn (S), Nji Nnamani (OPP; Michelle
Mellard came in to the front row at 23-10 in game two; Nnamani
returned ten points later to serve; Kirsten Hornbeak came in to
the back row at 22-12 in game three, Nnamani returned on rotating
to the front row four points later), Lizzie Suiter (MB),
Foluke Akinradewo (MB), Franci Girard (OH; Jessica Fishburn played
all the back row except that Girard started games one and three in
left back; Erin Waller replaced Fishburn on rotating to the front
row at 24-11 in game two - Fishburn returned to serve and finished
the game; Jennifer Wilson replaced Fishburn in left back at 24-15
in game three and finished the match in the front row), and
Kristin Richards (OH). Libero Courtney Schultz played for the
middles, and served for Suiter.
Scoring (Stanford score first; my usual conventions: comma
indicates a side-out, with the resulting score given after a series
of sides-out; period indicates the end of a rotation or the end
of a game; and anything in square brackets is a comment):
Game One (The Cardinal served first):
1-0 ,,2-1 3-1 ,3-2 3-4 ,,,,,,,7-7 9-7 ,9-8 9-10 ,10-10.
14-10 ,,,15-12 15-13 ,,,17-14 19-14 ,,20-15 22-15
,22-16 22-17 ,,23-18 23-20 ,24-20.
26-20 ,26-21 26-22 ,,27-23 27-25 ,28-25 30-25 [at 27-24,
Lund got an ace as the ball rolled over the net, but
a hitting error gave Stanford the serve. Two blocks by
Akinradewo and Nnamani ended it].
[there were a lot of long rallies. If I heard the announcer
correctly, Arizona State hit negative, while Stanford hit
under .100 for the game].
Game Two (The Sun Devils served first):
,1-0 7-0 ,,8-1 9-1 ,,,,11-3 13-3 ,,14-4 15-4 ,,,16-6.
16-7 ,17-7 18-7 ,,,,,,21-10 23-10 ,,,,25-12 26-12 ,26-13.
26-16 [three straight aces for Watkins before she served one
long] ,,,,28-18 28-20 ,,,30-21 [The Cardinal reached game
point at 29-20 on a block by Akinradewo and Goldhahn, but
Morton went soft off the block for a side-out. Richards
(who was hitting hard enough most of the night that many
times the dig went across the court and into the stands)
got a tip to fall to end the game].
Game Three (Stanford served first):
,0-1 0-2 ,1-2 3-2 ,,4-3 5-3 ,,6-4 7-4 ,,,,9-6 10-6 ,,11-7.
,,12-8 13-8 ,,14-9 15-9 ,,,16-11 16-12 ,17-12 22-12
,,,,24-14.
,24-15 24-16 ,25-16 26-16 ,26-17 26-21 [someone got a nice
pancake dig for Arizona State on the last point, leading
to a kill by Morton] ,,,28-22 29-22 [Stanford got the
side-out on a kill by Akinradewo off a set from Nnamani,
and then reached game point on another Akinradewo kill.
Burnley got a kill on a slide to end a long rally and
side-out for the Sun Devils] ,29-23 29-24 ,30-24 [Akinradewo
ran another slide and put the ball down to end the match].
If Arizona State were playing in a weaker conference, they would
certainly have a winning record this year - they are not a bad
team in any way. Unfortunately for them, they actually are in
the same league as Stanford (but only literally). This was
a good match to watch - lots of long rallies, some great digs
on both sides. Stanford had a lot of rejections - on one
sequence they blocked four balls in a row from the Sun Devil
left side, but Arizona State dug all of them and tried again
- I think they eventually got a good enough pass to set
someone else. One other play featured a block by Arizona State
that went nearly straight down - but Stanford managed to keep
the ball off the floor and put the third ball over - I don't
think the ball got further than two feet from the net from the
initial Stanford hit to the Arizona State dig (OK, maybe the dig
was three feet off, but it could not have been too far, as
Richards hit it from below the bottom of the net).
That's it from here. More tomorrow after the Arizona match.
Take care.
