Santa Clara at St. Mary's (NCAA WVB) - results

As usual, the results are down a page, in case anyone is trying to avoid them.

It was a pretty easy drive over to Moraga this afternoon.
I planned to have enough time to get dinner in the area
before the match, but didn't see anything that struck my
fancy. So I asked the guard at the entrance to St. Mary's
college, and he told me that a dining hall would serve
guests (luckily, I remembered the name long enough to
find it - but no longer). I happened to arrive just after
it opened, and there were only a couple of people before me.
It was $7 for guests, for (as far as I can tell) all you can
eat - pay at the entrance, and nothing to stop you from going
for seconds. If this is typical, St. Mary's students eat quite
well.

On the other hand, some of the fans around me (who appeared to
be St. Mary's students, but I was not checking IDs) had a very
loose interpretation of "supporting all participants in
a positive manner". The quote, by the way, is from the program,
which, under a headline "Sportsmanship Statement" has the usual
spiel I normally hear from the game announcer, in quotes. I wonder
about the quotes (read "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" and you might
wonder, too), but I wish someone would try to enforce the rule.

Anyway, enough babble. The results are just below.

Santa Clara won, 30-23, 30-27, 30-24. Side-out scores were
12-6, 12-9, 15-10.

My apologies in advance if I missed anyone. I depend on the
game announcer to alert me that a substitution has taken place
(even if I cannot understand the announcement, it gets me to
look up, and normally I can spot the player leaving and then
figure out who's new on the court). The game announcer must
have been weary after last night's five-game victory over
San Diego, and he definitely was pretty glum after each Bronco
point. I did hear the current score, and who was credited
with the point on St. Mary's scores, but I think most of the
substitutions were not announced.

The Gaels played: Mandy Bible (S), Cassandra Kolkka (OPP),
Christina Kirk (MB), Brittany Barker (MB; Taylor Groess served),
Kaui Salzman (OH), and Missie Stidham (OH). Libero Lyndsey Parker
played for the middles, but did not serve.

The Broncos played: Crystal Matich (S), Cassie Perret (OPP),
Megan Pura (MB; Taylor O'Brien served in game one;
Nichole Clark served in games two and three), Anna Cmaylo (MB),
Kim McGiven (OH; Kristen Luxton had a couple of plays in the
back row in game two), and Brittany Lowe (OH). Libero
Caroline Walters played for the middles, serving for Cmaylo.

Scoring (St. Mary's score first, as that is how my notes have it -
I was trying to match the scoreboard order; my usual conventions):

Game One (St. Mary's served first):
  ,0-1 0-2 ,1-2 2-2 ,,,3-4 3-5 ,4-5 6-5 ,,,,,,9-8.
  10-8 ,,,11-10 11-11 ,12-11 13-11 ,,,14-13 14-14 ,,15-15 15-19
    ,,,17-20.
  ,17-21 17-24 ,,18-25 18-26 ,19-26 20-26 ,,,,,,,23-30
[Santa Clara reached game point on a kill from Megan Pura
(the dig went over the net, wide), but the Gaels sided-out
with a block by Cassandra Kolkka. Pura got a quick set and
paintbrushed it - but the ball fell to end the game].

Game Two (Santa Clara served first):
0-2 ,,1-3 1-9 [two kills from McGiven, one from Cmaylo, two
aces by Cassie Perret, and a Gael hitting error, before
Missie Stidham put the ball between the blockers to get
    a side-out] ,2-9 3-9 ,,,,5-11 6-11 ,,7-12 9-12 ,,,10-14.
  ,11-14 12-14 ,12-15 12-17 ,,,14-18 15-18 ,,16-19 17-19
    ,,,,,19-22.
  ,,20-23 20-24 ,,,,,,,24-27 25-27 ,25-28 25-29 ,26-29 27-29
,27-30 [at 23-27, Barker got a kill for the side-out,
and Stidham got a kill to bring the Gaels within two at
25-27. Santa Clara called time-out, and then Lowe got
a kill from the right side for a side-out at 25-28.
The Gaels called time-out, but when play resumed,
Perret and Pura got a block to give the Broncos game point.
A ball handling error gave St. Mary's the serve, and
Stidham got a kill to make it 27-29. McGiven got a kill
    to end the game].

Game Three (St. Mary's served first):
  ,0-1 0-3 ,1-3 2-3 ,,,,,4-6 4-7 ,5-7 6-7 ,6-8 6-9 ,,7-10 7-11
    ,8-11.
  10-11 ,10-12 10-13 ,,,12-14 13-14 ,,,14-16 14-17 ,,15-18 15-22
    ,16-22 18-22 ,18-23 18-24 ,19-24.
  20-24 ,20-25 20-27 ,21-27 23-27 ,,,24-29 24-30 [from 22-27,
the Gaels got a triple block from Stidham, Kirk, and Bible
and Santa Clara called time-out. When play resumed, Cmaylo
ran a slide, and got a kill into the block for a side-out
at 23-28. Stidham and Kirk got a block to side-out at
24-28, but a service error gave the Broncos match point.
Brittany Lowe got a kill off the block - a dig attempt
wound up way back in the stands - to end the match].

That's it for tonight. The next match on my schedule is
Oregon at Stanford on Thursday - but first Little Women at
the American Musical Theatre of San Jose and The Tricky Part
at San Jose Rep (not to mention four days at work).

Have a good week (I certainly intend to).

Take care.

Mark
