Re: Coker Speed in training

Man with broken collar bone say, "Coker knows what they're talking
about! Going "fast" on a unicycle has always been fun for me. But the
change to commuting and going "constantly fast" raises the risk level
quite a bit. There's no way to be competitive in Ride The Lobster while
staying in a "safe" envelope. I'll just have to build up my confidence
along with my speed. Right now it's a little shaky...

Your reminding me of Ralf Nader's book, 'Unsafe at any speed' on the
Corvair.

Actually that book was about the automotive industry in general, though
it had a large focus on the early Corvairs, which had an amazingly
stupid design in their rear axles.

I got a Garmin 305 for Christmas, so these numbers are from that. My
average seems to be somewhere in the elevens (mph), over rides of 10-15
miles. This is calculated by including everything down to 1mph, but the
thing auto-pauses when I stop. I think If I set the pausing threshold a
little higher it would bring my average up. I seem to stay in the 13s
on the flat. I set it at 1 for MUni, where it might be meaningful. On
the few MUni rides I've done so far, my average speed is in the 4s. :)

Max speed recorded on the Garmin so far is 16.2, but I haven't pushed
it. That was just in the middle of my ride the other day. I used to be
able to hit 17.5 on a 24" unicycle with the same 125mm cranks, so I
know I can go considerably faster in a burst, if I'm fearless enough.
But right now I'm more about increasing the average. These rides have
been on mostly-flat bike path, with elevation variance of less than
200' or so.
