Thanks for all the input, folks.
Yeah, I'll think I'll have to trial carrying some weight on my back,
some weight on the front and back of the unicycle and just see which
combo works the best. And trial stuffing stuff in the spokes too. Coz
if we can find the right combo that makes a huge unsupported uni tour
in crappy weather, with a really good daily mileage possible...that'll
be the dream of any long distance adventure unicyclist...
Threadjack: Has anyone broken a Coker hub? I don't do trials on a Coker
but do UPD every once in a while. My biggest fear is the hub or rim
(airfoil) getting damaged in the middle of a tour.
Keep your load light and you won't have many issues with riding 70+km
daily. 100km per day is hard going though.
The UDC square taper hubs are pretty strong, provided you're not doing
trials or something on them. You can go off medium curbs no problem and
probably higher without worry, especially as your cranks get shorter
(110 is a nice touring size if you're not carrying a lot).
Unicycles are incredibly low maintenance. Get a good quality set of
pedals, preferably sealed bearing and removable with a hex key, install
the axle nuts that UDC sells that also use a hex key, and then you can
tighten any loose crank, pedal, adjust seat height and tilt (definitely
use something like a t7 or at least a rail type post..) with one set of
tools. Not carrying extra cranks also keeps your load light.
oh, and a small hand pump/tire patch kit & spare tube wouldn't go
astray either.
If your wheel is built well and you aren't dropping off foot-tall
obstacles multiple times a day you should be set in terms of wheel
strength. Keeping the tire pressure high is nice for distance touring
anyhow (as well as possibly saving your rim), since you roll a bit
better and save some energy at the end of the day.
