Hey, great post back in 2003 Dave. Great minds think alike, or maybe
more accurately, great minds think and post in 2003, and other minds
reiterate the info four years later. :)

The former.

I've been having fun on my multi-year quest to reduce my overall pack
weight on wilderness trips. A sleeping bag upgrade this past year
actually dropped a couple pounds, but I've run out of places for such
large savings. It's down to the fight for ounces and grams now.

Those get expensive! Check your techniques, such as where to make camp.
Also remember that water is extremely heavy, so drinking an extra
liter at the stream means that you don't have to carry it on your back
(two pounds!).

It is quite simple to tie say four 2- or 3-litre camelbaks between the
spokes. Many have a protective fabric edging to which fastening loops
can be sewn, for tying off round spokes. There is plenty of room
there for 8 or 10 litres.

Why would you be wanting to carry this much water? I can imagine
extended desert travel, but in that situation you'd run out quickly
anyway.
