A round or cirular column is a more efficient in it's shape than other
shapes. It's radius of gyration is the same in all directions. An oval
shaped column would be stronger in the long axis of the oval than the
short. An oval column has a larger radius of gyration in it's long axis
than in it's short axis. This means that the column or tube would bend
eisier in the short axis of the oval than the long. Try pushing on a
yard stick end to end. It will bed to the flat side way before it
bends to the thin side. Which brings up an interesting quesiton in uni
design. Are there any horizontal loads on the uni when it is being
ridden?? Or..... I own a shwin and it has been in our family for about
40 years. It's legs? or side straps? have never bent to the side. Is
this because there are no side loads when riding or because the straps
are pretty strong in the "flat" direction or because I don't do much
trial riding (some cross country or Muni). Has anyone out there ever
had or seen a shwin with the legs bent to the side?? so maybe the
load/weight on a uni is pretty much always down or compression and
there are no lateral loads so to speak. It certainly would make design
eisier. Of course I am not speaking of fast twist turns from the hip.
Definetly there is a torque component (the @#$%@ saddle post twists out
of position) but how much lateral or horizontal loading is there. Stuff
to ponder while considering your next trick.
