seems like for every issue that has been discussed, someone invokes
luxilon as the cause.
That's because it has changed the entire geometry of the game. Tennis geometry
is now approaching table tennis geometry, but on a table 27 feet wide.

And it's going to get worse, because some string manufacturer is soon going to
create a Luxilon equivalent that doesn't destroy your arm. With both mains and
crosses equivalent to Luxilon Rough -- or better -- shot velocities and
trajectories are going to be simply ridiculous.

If you doubt that, have one of your racquets strung entirely with Luxilon Rough,
and swing out on all your shots for a few days. (Then cut it off, or you won't
be playing for months...8;)  )

For the pros, string advancement is many times more significant than the
adoption of mid- and over-sized racquets. It has not only increased shot
velocities in general, but has hastened the adoption of lighter racquets in
order to maximize head speed and thus increase velocities even further.. As this
trend continues, I would expect to see proportionally more and more arm
injuries, even in the pro ranks.

Seems a bit Chicken Little-ish.
Clearly racquet changes have had the most significant impact on the
game.  Borg framed enough balls hitting heavy topspin--the head was
small and the frame was thick back then. There are trade-offs to using
a light racquet and most pros prefer a bit of heft. I think the effect
of the new strings is being a bit overblown in general and in this
post. Grips and hitting style has changed a great deal over the last 3
decades to emphasize spin as well. Since trade-offs and compromise are
part of the deal, these new strings, while offering excellent bite on
the ball, do not give the best feel and can be harsh on the arm. I
don't see how a mfr is going to change that since it is the stiffness
of the string that gives it the bite. I had problems at first, and I
never have arm problems, but I got used to it. Saying that the strings
have been more impactful on the game than racquet technology--many
times more, no less--is inaccurate.

thanks blanders - i'm not an expert on strings but my intuition was that
too much has been made recently around here about the impact of these
luxilon strings.

One man's opinion, but I do think so. Lendl strung with 17 or 18
gauge gut that he would change every 9 games or each new set. I woudl
go with that in a minute if it was practical. Gut is lively and
offers the best feel. I find the luxilon is beneficial mainly because
it is very stiff and holds tension well--doesn't move around. For the
first time ever I have broken cross strings (non-luxilon), so that
told me how tough the luxilon string is. Very stiff--I have punctured
my finger on the stuff where the idiot stringer cut off the knot
wrong--like a little pungi stick. It is definitely conducive to
hitting with spin, i don't deny that. I never hit with spaghetti
strings, but I think that is what old larry is envisioning. I don't
see that.
