For some in rst, being second best in the world at what you do makes
you a pathetic loser. Go figure.
Here is a harder question for you.
Look at the vitriol thrown at the latest 14 slam winner. Didn't little
bob say that Federer wasn't even a man? How does that work?
Yes, I'm not sure why bob dislikes Fed so much. FWIW, I think vitriol
should be reserved for instances of terrible sportsmanship, or maybe
blatantly tanking matches. We had
that the former with Mac and Connors and the latter with Agassi. All
of today's players are exemplary by comparison.
popular view in RST is i dislike fed because he was approaching and caught
sampras' records.
i used to cheer against sampras as much as for him when he played, and there
other things about sampras non tennis related that i didn't particularly
like.
i dislike federer because of his ego and the subtle -almost chicken - ways
in which he displays it. he is like a poor man's serena - always believing
he lost the match but was never beaten, and says it in a polite voice.
i like the way he fights hard on the court (except last yr's FO) and on
court i can't say a single bad thing about him. but after a win - or a
loss - he's a prick nearly every time, but too subtle for most to see. he
believes himself superior to everyone else, and says so, but in subtle ways.
i think the other players are even too dumb to realize he's doing it - where
serena is so over the top blatant anyone can see.

Federer has a large ego (probably handles it more gracefully than most
would, given the endless praise heaped upon him), and yeah he inwardly
thinks he's better than everyone. But except for Rafa he pretty much
*is* better than everyone, so a large percentage of his so-called
arrogance is actually just straight shooting... I think it's rare to
find real modesty in a champ of that caliber. At least he has the
tact to try to cover it up. Occasionally it slips out.
