Argentinians rule out clay for Davis Cup final
By: thinkSPAIN , Tuesday, September 30, 2008
The Argentinian Tennis Association (AAT) has bowed to player pressure to ensure that the Davis Cup final against Spain will not be played at the country's normal Davis Cup venue - the uncovered clay courts of the Parque Roca stadium in Buenos Aires - because of the risk of late spring rain and the undoubted mastery of the slow surface of a Spanish team led by clay court king, Rafael Nadal.
Instead, the final will be staged on fast indoor courts either at the Orfeo stadium in Córdoba, or at the Islas Malvinas (Falkland Islands) sports centre in Mar de Plata on the Atlantic coast.
It will be the first time Argentina has not hosted a Davis Cup tie at the 14,000 seater Parque Roca stadium, and the International Tennis Federation (ITF) will insist that the new venue be adapted to hold at least 12,000.
The bigger of the two options, the Orfeo stadium in Córdoba, which is the players' preferred choice, was designed to hold 9,000, but the AAT is confident that a further 3,000 can be accommodated safely.
