He does not seem to enjoy playing and looks very run down. I wish

It's not clear that rest would cure what ails 'im, though. In the
past, he's always played his way back to form, and I think he's trying
to stick to what worked when the things that worked were working. If
you see what I mean.

We are talking about different things. He looks sick and without fire.
Circles under his eyes and he seem to have lost some weight.

Losing Wimbledon to rafa had to have been beyond heartbreaking, and
humiliating. I think Fed may have taken the game he gravitated to
several years ago as far as he could, and now it looks like it will be
difficult to get back on top with it or some more aggressive varient
of it. I think he is fortunate to have 12 and not 10, but the extra 2
might have made him a bit more complacent in terms of what really
needed to be done to ensure his stay at the top of the game.

Always (willfully) assuming what we're seeing is anything close to
Federer's best.

It isn't.

federer's been under-par since his illness in january

Yes. He's had a pretty good run for 4.5 years. This kind of setback
was bound to happen sooner or later. Now we see how he copes with it.
Frankly, the fact that Nadal is #1 is yet to settle with me. Federer
needs to take his throne back. Hopefully the mono will completely wear
off by this year.

he's probably worried that if he takes a break it'll be harder to come
back - you can get away with it on the WTA as the relative level is so
much lower.

Fed's fighting spirit is not in evidence, it's nothing like that of Nadal or Roddick even, from what I've seen he relies largely on his talent and not much else, if he's off game he doesn't usually bother fighting back at all, take the Canas games as an example. ...
