Enter John McEnroe - not John McEnroe Junior, the tennis player, but
John McEnroe Senior, his father and a prominent New York attorney.
McEnroe senior has announced that he hopes to replace De Villiers as the
ATP's chairman.
In a letter he circulated last week, he outlined his credentials and
made clear that he would be, first, an advocate for the players, and
particularly those at the game's highest echelons, befitting his
Republican status.
'"I am strongly of the view that the best interests of the men
players, particularly the top-ranked players, have been very badly
served by Mr de Villiers, to put it mildly, and by his predecessors," he
wrote. "The rules for participation on the Tour are an abomination. My
own view is that no player should be required to play in any tournament
if he doesn't wish to do so. Also, as long as a player's ranking
entitles him to entry, he should be able to enter any tournament without
requiring a minimum of tournaments each year. This is a position I have
held for over 30 years.
Yesterday Mr. McEnroe announced that his vice-chairman running mate
is Anna Kournikova.
Is this a joke?
