An olympic gold is a tremendous achievement, be it in singles or
doubles, and though it will eat him inside that Nadal is the gold
medalist in the singles and he came up empty handed (especially after

gold medal would be just the tonic he needs for his sagging spirits.
The big encouraging sign I see is that Fed got his act together for
the doubles to beat some accomplished teams like Bhupathi/Paes and the
Bryans, AFTER his defeat in the singles competition. It surely would
have been easy to be disheartened and play a stinker under those
circumstances.

I first thought that the doubles gold wouldn't mean much at all, or
would be just a curiosity, but thinking about it and reading his
comments, I think it might be a pretty big thing for him at this
point.

Any championship will be a balm for Fed right now, and no doubt he'll
be proud to have won something for his country, but a doubles medal
won't be nearly enough to salvage 2008 for him (assuming he doesn't
win the USO).
