An olympic gold is a tremendous achievement, be it in singles or
doubles, and though it will eat him inside that Nadal is the gold
medalist in the singles and he came up empty handed (especially after

gold medal would be just the tonic he needs for his sagging spirits.
The big encouraging sign I see is that Fed got his act together for
the doubles to beat some accomplished teams like Bhupathi/Paes and the
Bryans, AFTER his defeat in the singles competition. It surely would
have been easy to be disheartened and play a stinker under those
circumstances.

Yes, because in a year when Nadal has taken everything away from
Federer (Wimbledon, #1 ranking, again denying him at the French),
Nadal now looks set to achieve the one goal that Fed had placed such a
high priority on without even giving it too much importance. In a way,
Nadal is sending the message: I am so much better than you right now,
that I even win tournaments I don't rate too highly and you place on
par with grand slams, even when its played on a surface thats supposed
to benefit you (super-fast, low bounce hard-court). Not to mention the
fact that Fed probably is all but assured of finishing his career with
no Olympic medal in singles play. Its bound to eat him inside, but as
I pointed out, if he can win the gold in doubles that will ease the
pain...
