"Cheville" isn't exactly "ankle", or even "shin". It includes more of

I don't know who this guy is, but if he *is* a friend of the Nadal
family, this is a weird thing to do, go blab to the press.
Still, given that this is what it's looked like to me for quite a
while, it's all too easy to believe.
Why don't we wait until Nadal gets on clay before we decide whether he's
finished or not? The quality of his year really is determined by his
clay season.
I don't think he's finished, really, in any case. But he *has* been
hampered by injuries, on clay as well as off. It's just that
hardcourts are a marginal surface for him to start with, so it's a
heck of a lot more obvious there.- Hide quoted text -

One thing I know for sure is that Nadal will not stop fighting in the
court until he gets crippled.
The truth is he reaches SF on HC, so who will be able to stop him from
winning titles on clay except he is really unable to move?!
I see him the favourite to win the FO again except he get many young
guys that get him tired before the final, like Tsonga, Djokovic,etc.- Hide quoted text -
Tsonga is a nobody on clay and Djokovic lacks endurance (on clay). RG
clay suits Rafa's game the best better than any of the clay tune-ups.
Hard to see anybody going past him this year again.

But since his speed is THE reason for his near-invincibility on
clay,
even a half-step drop in speed on clay may mean a greater drop in
his efficacy than on HC, where he almost never wins anyway.
No, the speed helps, but on clay his *other* exceptional weapons -
aggression and the forehand come to mind - have great impact as well.
On hardcourt, he is just about *completely* dependent on his speed. By
the same token, many players's game is blunted. So he may be able to
compensate more easily, *and* it may be harder for others to pressure
him..
Plus, it's entirely possible that he is just in less pain on clay and
grass. That's fairly common.- Hide quoted text -

yes, he can't go full speed on hard courts, he has to be careful about
the stress from stops and change of directions on hard courts.
'sliding' on clay courts makes it easier on his body. he's a natural
on clay as far as movement on clay is concerned.
plus as you pointed out 'speed' is not the only things that makes him
better on clay. his groundies become that much more lethal on clay due
to the fraction of additional time he gets to hit his shots.
