To me it looks like Fed is trying to 'step on the gas' but he doesn't have the all out power & obviously net/serve game to scare his younger opponents.

Fed's game is all about being patient & grinding points out. If he loses patience he doesn't have the big power, extra dimensions of net game/huge serving to win points quickly. Could very well be going down the Borg path.
