It irritates us New South Welshmen - you don't see 'SYDNEY' painted on
the Opera House.

Well, everyone everywhere knows what the Sydney Opera House looks
like. But when you see a tennis court, you have no idea where it is
unless you know something about the tournament -- and Melbourne is
undoubtedly correct to surmise that many viewers don't.

Your irritation just illustrates my larger point, because you aren't a
foreigner in Oz. Municipal rivalries and regional annoyances generally
matter a lot to people within countries, but not at all outside them.
Someone from New York won't care if Roland Garros spells out "Paris"
in white sand right along the baseline, but probably would jeer and
complain if another U.S. city tried to promote itself the same way.
