I have heard that chinese has been simplified recently and many
young chinese can not read classic chinese symbols anymore and
as a result are losing contact with a form of writing that hasn't
changed in hundreds of years.

Chinese was simplified 50 years ago in mainland China but not in
Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. People who learn simplied Chinese first
will have difficulty reading the traditional one and vice versa. But
it only takes time to adjust when people move to another place where a
different version is used.
