down a $270,000 offer to pose for a series of ''erotic photographs'' in
the German-language edition of Penthouse magazine.

$270,000 offer to pose for a series of ''erotic photographs'' in the
German-language edition of Penthouse magazine.

''I was surprised that they would even think of doing it,'' Graf said.

Bild, the mass circulation West German newspaper, which reported the
offer, quoted Peter Graf, her father and manager, as saying: ''We were
very pleased with the offer, but of course we turned it down. Steffi is
a tennis player and not a model. It is astonishing what ideas people
come up with, We had a good laugh but we made it clear that the answer
was 'No.''

Carlo Frey, the publisher of the German-language Penthouse, said the
magazine believed the ''whole world'' would be interested in the
photographs. ''She is now 18 and she is without doubt Germany's most
popular young lady,'' Bild quoted Frey as saying. ''Everyone knows what
she is like on a tennis court, but no one knows what she is like
privately.''
