In a nutshell:
There was a time when the internet was only accesible to those computer
geeks - they understood what the internet was, and behaved in a decent
manner, adhering to codes of conduct and being civilized (the current
spam mail problem is so huge because email was designed in a more naive
and civilized phase of the internet's life). Usenet newsgroups used to
be strictly on topic, with no moderation! :D
Then along came AOL, who gave internet access to the masses. Suddendly,
formerly civilized forums are filled to the rafters with net-ignorant
people, who behave like a rhino in a glass shop, earning the scorn from
all the computer-literate people.
And they happily hated AOLers ever after.
