Relative to price, and adjusted for inflation.
I think Andy Carroll will take some beating. Others who come to mind:
Denilson - Adjusted for inflation I think he was more expensive than
Carroll. I never saw him play for Betis, but heard he was a total
flop.
Shevchenko - Cost 31 large ones in 2006, 9 goals in 48 appearances.
Carroll has 4 in 23 games. More or less the same ratio, and price is
close too. But Shevchenko was proven world class prior to the signing,
so Carroll has to be the worse signing here.
Veron - Cost 28 million, was considered underwhelming in the league
but did good in the UCL. So not as bad as the two strikers above.
Woodgate - The price wasn't that high (13m), but Glassgate was only
able to play 9 games total over 2 seasons at Real Madrid. Considering
he was known to be injury prone AND injured prior to the signing, this
one has to rank very high in the boneheaded department.
Torres - Injured, dropped for Sturridge, benched for a month recently, 5
goals in 38 matches for Chelsea, including 3 in 27 in the league, and cost
50m, was broken down when Chelsea signed him, cost 50m pounds, has lacked
form badly, so bad he has one of the worst misses in football history
against his name now, and oh year, cost 50m pounds!!!
You've won. But wait, how about Kaka? 70 millions euro, 2 injuries
laden seasons out of 3. He did ok when he did play, but he hasn't been
an integral part of the team. They don't need him at all.
Denilson was the worlds most expensive signing for Real Betis. He
might just be the worst ever?
Lentini for Milan was a world record signing and a bit of a dud as
well, though he had a motorcycle accident that made things worse
Heiko Herrlich was a Bundesliga record and did not do too well, though
he had a brain tumour operation, which, though he came back from, was
never really the same .
I would say Denilson is the worst, a world record signing that took
his team down to relegation and barely scored. Betis spending all
that cash on him probably bankrupted the club? Surprisingly, I think
he did OK for Brazil (like a Brazilian Podolski). But if Torres keeps
it up -or down I should say- he might just be the worst. Thing is a
team like Milan or Chelsea wasting a bunch of money, does not really
hurt them as much as a smaller team spending a bunch, so yeah Denilson
wins in my opinion.
