How the mighty have fallen!

Anorthosis Famugusta (CYP)  3-0  SK Rapid Wien (AUT)

But not as much as Austrian football!

This is a terrible result, but sadly not much of
a surprise...

Rapid were kind of a surprise champion last year
- mostly thanks to Salzburg's at times abysmal
performance - and they lost some key players
during the off-season, especially Korkmaz who
went to Frankfurt (only to break his leg in the first
training session). And then Famagusta aren't
exactly a bunch of no-namers (not more so than
Rapid, at least), they recently signed Dellas (who
didn't play in this match though) and have the
former French hope Bardon in their ranks.

OTOH Red Bull Salzburg, after finally having got
rid of Trapattoni, at long last seem to be on the
right track - with Adriaanse as coach they have
already been playing some very refreshing and
attack-minded football. I could see them leaving
an impression in this year's UEFA Cup.

Also, after the at-least-not-that-bad performance
at the Euro there are now more Austrians playing
abroad than in a long long time. Plus, we now
have Karel Brückner as national coach (who, I
believe, will fit in very well), so not everything's
gloomy.

Werner
