Poor match. The American's showed nothing. Playing with Beckham is like
playing with two right backs. He's lost the little 'pace' he had and as
a result was stuck in his own half making tackles and trying to look
busy. Lampard was crap as usual and I didn't think much of Rooney's
performance either. Today Capello has criticised him for his tackling.
As soon as Barry came on as a second half sub Gerrard scored. Ashley
Young on the left, Bentley on the right (even though he also had a poor
game), Gerrard and Barry in the middle, Agbonlahor and Crouch in attack
is what I'd like to see.
Nobody expects very much from a friendly, but I thought England played
well in the second half, better than one might expect from an end-of-
season "non" game. Agree 100% about Gerrard-Barry in the middle,
since Barry came in England have definitely played better though that
in itself wasn't enough to ensure qualification for Euro 2008.
Lampard isn't "usually" crap - either you are right or those who voted
him runner-up to Ronaldhino as the world's best a couple of years
back, not to mention we mere fans, are possibly right. He's a very
accomplished player, but he is definitely not as good when playing for
England as for his club which is a mystery. It has also been the case
for long enough for people to recognise that maybe he never will be.
I like Crouch (who is a lot more accomplished in the finer arts of
striking than casual observers give him credit for) but when he plays
there is a tendency for England to aim for his head just about every
time they attack whereas, as we saw in the CL final, English players
can actually play a pretty nifty passing game and this was evident in
the second half against the USA. Rooney will work his socks off and
make a nuisance of himself so that others get chances - he is probably
one of the best in the world at that. Shame for him that's now his
role at both Man U and England as he can be very exciting as well as
skillful but it works.
I enjoyed it as a game of football, which is more than you can say
about most England friendlies!
Cheers
UD
