This actually makes for a good thread topic. I think Benny has
commented on this before. At what age can we expect a player to
"peak." Obviously, it will vary a bit depending on physical stature
and the extent to which a player's game is dependent upon speed and
quickness.
Players in plenty of sports can make up for dwindling physical skills
by learning new tricks or learning to use their dwindling skills more
efficiently. Some are good at it, some just never learn. Baseball
pitchers lose velocity but can keep going into their early 40s by
learning more tricks as they get older. Connors and Agassi in tennis
are both examples. Footballers can learn where to be at the right
time, learn to conserve energy. Strikers can work out how to beat
opponents and keep hitting the back of the net after they've peaked
physically. Some can do it, some can't.
Aah what I was trying to say is that there will never be a given age where
a footballer can be considered to be 'past it', for the simple reason that
some can adjust in other ways when their physical skills dwindle, some
never learn how to.
