I feel Africa, NA and Asia have too many spots now and none of these
team perform that well. None of the Asian teams progressed to second
round. One NA team Mexico progressed from a lame group and put up a
crappy performance against Argentina who were playing well below their
potential for some reason. One Africa team progressed and were truly
embarrased in 2nd round.
This allocation will result in better competition. Most of the good
teams are from Europe and SA where soccer is played and watched the
most.
It is ridiculous that teams like Iran, Togo, Saudi Arabia make it to
world cup, while quality sides like Uruguay, Colombia, Denmark, Norway,
Belgium, Romania, Turkey, Greece, Slovakia, Russia miss out just
because they were drawn in a tough group and only the top teams
advance.
For example Romania missed out because they were in Netherland/Czech
group and only top 2 advance. Turkey/Denmak/Greece missed out from the
Ukraine group. Turkey lost in play offs to the Swiss inspite of
thumping them 4-2 in the second play off. Slovakia, Russia missed out
from the Portugal group, Slovakia lost in play offs to Spain. Norway
finished second to Italy but lost in play offs. Belgium were kind of
crap this time.
Uruguay and Colombia finished 6th from the tough SA zone. Uruguay lost
to Australia in play offs.
I feel Africa, Asia and NA need to be docked 1/2 spot each and it
should be handed over to Europe and SA.
Better idea - have 62 teams in the final qualifying round, with a
global draw. each federation to have 2 teams for every 1 they have in
the current World Cup.
If you want to guarantee confederations have at least 1 representative
at the World Cup, you could give Africa, Asia and CONCACAF 1 place
each, leaving 28 places to be filled from a draw involving 56 teams.
