I've posted to several other groups before, but I'm relatively new here.
I
was looking for other perpectives on the World Cup because ESPN just
isn't
doing it for me.

I really enjoy Victoria Barnett's updates. Since the first game of each
day
starts here at 9 a.m., her reports are about the only way I can find out
anything about those games (and I'm a sports editor for a small-town
newspaper here but the wire services don't send a paper this small
anything
more than scores).

hm ... it appears you have access to the internet, and i assume basic
cable
TV, so you should have a few different ways of finding out about these
games
apart from VB's updates.

for example, try the live score links at match time here:
http://www.eurosport.com/football/worldcup/2006/

and here for loads of info on teams, players, reports, highlight videos,
etc
,... http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/

Thanks. I do have cable TV at home, but we don't have any TV at work (We're
an old-fashioned paper that comes out in the afternoon, so I have to do a
lot of work in the morning).

And all the computers at work are Apples; older ones which work however they
damn well please. I don't have a lot of options.

And, no, I don't mind if you bash Americans for their soccer ignorance.

You have me confused with someone else because I have never bashed anyone
for their lack of soccer knowledge.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I meant "you" in a general world-wide sense.
Sort of like the royal "we" I have to use in a story when refering to my own
point of view.

I
can't defend the entire country and I'm not going to try. Sometimes, it
does
befuddle me how soccer can seem so defensively oriented but I don't see
it,
like I think so many Americans do, as a lack of *attempting* to score.

My advice is to forget about all this negative stuff and to just enjoy the
matches, the players, the teams. This is probably the best thing you can
do
for the readers of your newspaper.

I used to frequent rec.sport.pro-wrestling. You have to have tough skin to
be a part of *that* group.
=o)

Ironically, I haven't been able to do much for my readers. Ads have been
gobbling up a lot of my space (I usually only have more than one page on
only Sunday and maybe Monday). Pair that with the lack of AP wire support
and I haven't been able to run World Cup stories on anyone other than the
U.S. And even then, not every day.

S.E.N.
Hoping for one of the games to be replayed on ESPN tonight; I should go look
that up real quick.
