Can you tell me, post nineties, the role of wingers in football
having nosedived to the extent that it has, how many world
class wingers there have been ?

Going back to 1980, looking at winners of WC and Euro:

Germany 1980. No real wingers , but played 4-3-3 with Allofs and Rumenigge wide.

Italy 1982 - Bruno Conti would count as a winger, no ?

France 1984. 4 man midfield, no wingers.

Argentina 1986 - dunno, would you call any of them wingers ?

Holland 1988. Don't recall any wingers, but I didn't see those matches.

germany 1990. No real wingers but agressive wing backs in a 5-3-2 (or call it 3-5-2 if you will) formation.

Denmark 1992 - not sure

Brazil 1994. I can't recall any wingers.

Germany 1996. No real wingers

France 1998. No wingers. Lizarazu provided some winger-like qualities.

France 2000. No wingers

Brazil 2002. No wingers, but with full backs like Roberto Carlos and Cafu, they aren't needed.

Greece 2004. Would not have called their wide midfield players wingers.

I bet you could count them on one hand.

Regarding Argentina, they never play pure wingers. England
and Portugal are 2 sides which I think have been partial to
wingers.

England ? I wouldn't say so. Who was the last genuine winger to hold down a position for England over a long series of matchs ? You might have to go back to Waddle and Barnes.

Portugal and Holland have definitely liked wingers - Figo, Sergio Conceicao, C. Ronaldo, Simao, Quaresma etc. for Portugal. Robben, van der Meyde, Overmars, even Thaumont and Roy, for the NL.

Spain has used pure wingers sometimes (Joaquin, Vicente) but certainly not always. Some of their players that played wide (Mendieta, Luis Enrique) I wouldn't really consider wingers any more than I consider Beckham a winger.
