Normalized by population (MP/M)

Why just normalize by population? I guess that you want some measure of how
each country performed relative to its "potential". But the potential to
succeed in the Winter Olympics is also a function of a country's wealth (as
measured by its GDP per capita), and by its distance from the equator (as
measured by the latitude of each country's capital city).

Hmm. Shouldn't you factor in average altitude as well as average
distance from equator ? Some quite southerly countries actually do have
wintery conditions (at least in part of their territory), like Spain.
You can ski within sight of Africa in the Sierra Nevada.

Or perhaps just using average temperature in January might account for
both average altitude and distance from equator.

Also average distance from equator of the capital city is a slightly
distorting statistic (unduly benefitting the US and Britain). Would
Canada's performance really be better if Toronto were capital instead of
Ottawa ? It would be better to measure the mean distance from the
equator of the place of residence of citizens, though I realise those
numbers would be hard to come up with.

I'm guessing you mean a determination of population mean center. But
then, shouldn't proximity to conditions conducive to doing well at
winter sports be factored in?

It seems as though we're trying so hard to determine whether or not
country A or B or X or whatever has overachieved/underachieved/"won"
the Olympics, etc. Statistical analysis is fun and in many cases
meaningful, but at some point, I just wanna say I enjoyed watching
Klassen, Lange, the Flying Tomato, Forsberg, Raich, Zhang, Ahn, etc.
without obsessing over where they came from.
