A collegue of mine (he does headlamps whilst I do tail lamps...cause
I'm not bright enough to be a headlamp engineer) worked with one of our
suppliers on the front and rear lamps on this car:

The light source for the projector main beam is four of the latest,
soon to be released LEDs, and they provide a legal low beam equivalent
to an automotive halogen projector lamp. The only draw back with them
at the moment is they need to be heat-sinked, but they will run much
longer than an equivelant halogen bulb on the same power source. I have
a sample of LED's on my desk at the moment from Osram they call 'Golden
Dragons'. They are currenlty the brightest LED's we have seen and they
are much brighter than any LED I have seen in a toarch so far....you
cannot look straight at the light source for even a moment and have to
be mounted behind a fresnal or diffuse optic for safety.
There is much speculation as to where LED's are going in automotive
lighting. The latest projections from a couple of major auto lighting
suppliers I have seen are LEDs will pass the performance of bi-xenon
lamps by 2015.
