It's just the damn balance issue, I think: even when I try to convince
myself that going backward is the same as going forward only in the
opposite direction! I think it's part of my problem with forward
3turns, too: discomfort with ending up backward on one foot. But...I'm
seeing gradual improvement, so I'm feeling hopeful! And I guess that I
just have to keep practicing, practicing, practicing that backward
1-foot glide, regardless of frustration or boredom.
As an adult skater who is mysteriously more comfortable going backwards
rather than forwards, the two things that I notice are that when I
skate backwards, my weight shifts back from what I would ordinarily
think of as the sweet spot--somewhere on the front half of my foot--to
somewhere on the back half of my foot. It shouldn't be so far back that
you're set back on your heel, because then you'll feel as though you're
about to fall, but do think of shifting that weight back in that
direction. Also, if your feet pronate so that you're leaning onto the
inside edge noticably, make sure you think about keeping the foot very
centered if you are trying to do a one-foot glide. I had my hockey kids
try just standing on the ice and feeling where the weight belongs at
the point when they feel centered, just before they are trying to do
something, like skating backwards.
