SAINT PETERSBURG, Russia: Olympic and three-time world
figure skating champion Yevgeny Plushenko of Russia
announced yesterday that he has decided to return to
amateur competition in a bid to defend his title at the
2010 Vancouver Games.
"It's a fact that I have returned to amateur skating,"
Plushenko told the press.
"I just came back home from the training session in St
Moritz, Switzerland, where I practised a 3.5 axel and
even tried myself in quadruple jumps.
"This year I'm planning to participate in minor
competitions at the national level," he added. "But next
year I hope I will compete at full strength"at the
national, European and the world championships.
"And of course, my main goal is the Vancouver Olympics. I
returned to skating to compete there."
Plushenko, 25, claimed gold at the 2006 Turin Games after
taking silver four years earlier in Salt Lake City.
After winning the Olympic title Plushenko announced that
he was taking a sabbatical year which he has extended
into this season.
He has during that time, however, competed in a number of
gala events along with rivals including Swiss Stephane
Lambiel, the Olympic runner-up, and France's Brian
Joubert, the reigning world champion.
Until last week the Russian held the record for the
highest individual score in the men's event, but was
overtaken by Japan's Daisuke Takahashi.

All of these skaters are lucky that Ota (sp?) was derailed after the
DD incident on his moped.

If that wasn't a set up - FIXXXXXXXXXXX.

I hope he wins the Olympics.
