article - recap of the Canadian nationals for Ice Dancing

February 5, 2008,

... ... ... ... ...

The following is a recap of the nationals.

The junior nationals (which comprise juvenile, pre-novice
and novice) wrapped up in Ottawa last weekend;

The senior nationals (which comprise senior and junior)
were held last month in Vancouver.

JUNIOR NATIONALS

Novice dance: First, Olivia Nicole Martins and Alvin
Chau.

Pre novice dance: First, Abby Carswell and Frederick
Cheng; second, Kelly Oliveira and Jordan Hockley.

Juvenile dance: Second, Mackenzie Bent and Garrett
Mackeen; fourth, Katie Desveaux and Dmitre Razgulajevs.

SENIOR NATIONALS

Junior dance: First, Kharis Ralph and Asher Hill (this
was the third straight national gold for the pair, having
won the novice and pre-novice championships in the
previous two years).

Senior dance: Fourth, Vanessa Crone and Paul Poirier
(first ever senior nationals after winning junior last
year; in addition Poirier finished second in junior
men's).

"They were second in the free dance and they were the
only team in both Canadian and U.S. nationals to score
Level 4 in all their elements in both the original dance
and the free dance, which is the highest level you can
get. Even (winners Tessa) Virtue and (Scott) Moir didn't
do that this time," Lane said. "They were just
incredible. That was like, 'Oh my God, how did that
happen'."

As to how the Scarborough-based club got to be such a
powerhouse in dance, Lane with a chuckle, said "we worked
bloody hard - that's what we did. We worked our tails off
for years is what we did.

"All of our students that we have now pretty much -
particularly Vanessa and Paul and Asher and Kharis - are
teams that we've had from babies.

"We brought them up from the beginning. So it's even more
satisfying. You know they didn't come to us six weeks ago
and we stood at the boards while they won. Everything
that they did, we did with them."

The Ralph/Hill and Crone/Poirier duos advance to the
junior world's which start Feb. 25 in Sofia, Bulgaria
