I know the new code of points system takes away some of the
spontaneity. But why on earth couldn't Irina throw in another triple to
make up for earlier omissions? I understand that the ladies can do a
maximum of seven triples? Well, Irina landed four: the lutz, flip,
salchow and toe. She fell on the loop and doubled a flip. Couldn't she
have thrown in another jump towards the end,

There are restrictions on the number of triples and number or jumping
passes, (8 jumping passes for men, I don't know how many for women) If
you haven't done as many triples as you'd like but you've used up your
jumping passes, even a 4/4 won't count. I'm not sure how she stood in
terms of jumping passes but they're two separate things to consider.

Also, there's been some speculation that there's something about that
venue (altitude? something in the construction? something else?) or its
immediate environs that aggravates Slutskaya's condition.
At any rate, this olympics was almost a carbon copy of 2005 Euros in
the same venue. Good SP followed by far weaker than usual LP. I don't
know how long she was in the venue then vs now, but the only outright
bad (and very uncharacteristic) LP's she's had in two seasons are both
in the same venue. Random chance or something else? She didn't look in
the best of health in either phase, her face seemed puffy and splotchy.
If she goes to worlds, we'll see what she looks like (and how she
skates) there. I'm hoping for a comeback.
